The La Trobe University Bachelor of Applied Cloud Technology has been purpose-built for the cloud computing sector, which is currently enjoying rapid growth, and incorporates 6 highly regarded industry certifications (4 of which are Amazon Web Services specific) within the degree qualification.
The course contains knowledge and skills across information systems, web and software development, machine learning, databases and big data, enterprise cloud migration, cloud enterprise application development and computer networks. The course is applied in its focus and prepares students for key vendor certifications that are relevant to IT industry employment.
This qualification has been developed in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS). La Trobe University online applied degrees provide you with the unique opportunity to achieve up to three qualifications over the duration of your studies. Subject to satisfactorily completing each part of your course, you will be awarded an applied diploma (end year 1), an applied associate degree (end year 2), and an applied bachelor degree when you complete all three years. Your potential earning capacity increases as you progress through your course.
After completing year 1 of your degree, you will be awarded with an Applied Diploma, should you decide to exit your degree at this point. You can add this qualification to your résumé and move forward with your career plans or embrace the option to continue your studies while you work.
Diploma of Applied Cloud Technology
This subject provides a general and practical introduction to information technology. It covers: fundamental principles of computer operation, the main hardware components of the computer, data storage and retrieval, introduction to system software, introduction to data communications, computer networks, the internet; operating systems, file management systems, security, introduction to information systems; application software modules: spreadsheets, database packages, and the World Wide Web.
In this subject we introduce cloud concepts, core cloud services, architecting on cloud and cloud support. We also look at various database options to examine the various services available to access databases on the cloud. The fundamentals of Windows server on the cloud and its administration will also be studied. This subject is designed to prepare students for undertaking a vendor certification.
You are introduced to computers, object-oriented concepts and programming using Java. Topics covered include classes and objects, primitive data types, flow of control, methods, basic input/output and arrays. Software engineering principles are introduced, including coding standards, class design and testing strategies. You are also introduced to a framework for identifying and analysing ethical problems associated with software development.
To operate effectively within any information system, an understanding of the theory and practice of database management systems is essential. This subject is designed to deepen your interest and expertise in databases in general with a focus on cloud databases. A cloud database stores/processes data on the cloud. We start by looking at how database systems have evolved. The subject is mainly concerned with the relational data model and students learn the basics of database design using entity-relationship diagrams and how this design can then be mapped onto the relational model. A significant part of the subject is devoted to the use of structured query language (SQL). A commercial database management system will be used throughout the subject to provide hands-on skills. Foundations of normalising as well as data security will also be discussed.
In this subject, you are introduced to the concept of an information system (IS) including file design, input/output/interface design, file conversion and implementation techniques. This subject addresses the systems development life cycle as a framework for IS development and emphasises the role and involvement of users in an IS project. The use of appropriate fact-finding techniques in systems analysis and an introduction to data flow and E-R modelling are covered. Several information system case studies are used to illustrate the concepts introduced. You will receive hands-on experience in the construction of a small information system using a suitable prototyping tool.
In this subject, we introduce the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of the internet and other computer networks. The subject also covers OSI and TCP/IP layer models to examine the nature and roles of protocols and services at the application, transport, network, data link, and physical layers. The fundamentals of IP addressing and basic concepts of Ethernet will also be studied.
The teaching of object-oriented concepts is continued from the introductory subject CSE1OFX. You’ll gain more experience with the Java programming language and basic software engineering principles. Topics covered include inheritance (class hierarchies, abstract classes), input/output streams, file operations, exceptions, interfaces, recursion, generics and dynamic data structures (linked lists). Software engineering principles are further developed, including parameters for characterising software quality and testing strategies. You will continue to practise the identification and analysis of ethical issues that may arise during software development.
In this subject, you are introduced to developing and implementing a workplace sustainability policy in line with a current theoretical framework and modifying it to suit the interconnections between the economy, society and the environment. You will identify, analyse and evaluate information to develop, monitor and modify organisational policies in accordance with legislative and organisational goals and changing business circumstances. During this process, you are required to communicate and consult with internal and external stakeholders. The subject also requires you to plan, sequence and use systematic and analytical processes to research and gather data and to evaluate outcomes of decision-making to identify improvements.

Associate Degree of Applied Cloud Technology
This subject provides an understanding of virtualisation concepts and exposure to different virtualisation solutions. Students will utilise this knowledge to design, implement and manage a virtualisation solution for a given scenario. The practicality of using virtualisation on cloud is particularly emphasised.
The focus of this subject is the skills and knowledge required to develop applications on the cloud platform. The subject provides information on creating applications, using communication protocols, web connectivity and the application of different techniques. Key concepts of application development on the cloud such as design, debug, develop and deploy are also covered.
In this subject, you are introduced to modern operating systems and their major components. You will learn these concepts by working on the Linux operating system. You interact with the Linux operating system using advanced command-line processing and basic shell scripts. Process and memory management, file systems and several other concepts are also covered.
This subject focuses on the skills and knowledge required to manage information and communications technology projects in the cloud. The subject takes a practical approach by taking students from the project planning stage to the project closure stage. It covers conducting a feasibility study, how to establish and work effectively in a project team, financial planning, project management tools and software, and project management methodologies. It provides students with an opportunity to gain practical skills and knowledge in using various project management tools that are available in the cloud.
This subject is an introduction to discrete mathematics. These concepts are useful in several branches of computer science as computers operate in discrete binary states. Among the topics covered are: sets, functions, relations, counting, sequences, modular arithmetic and Big-O notation. All these topics are central to the application of mathematics in electronics and computer science.
The focus of this subject is on routing and switching within a computer network. Cisco routers and switchers are used as an example platform to highlight the practical aspects of this technology.
The subject starts with fundamental networking concepts (i.e., topologies, cabling types, IP addressing) and moves on to LAN switching, routing fundamentals and practical configurations (e.g., NAT) of Cisco devices.
This subject introduces students to the fundamentals of machine learning (history, algorithm types, uses) and then covers an efficient implementation of machine learning algorithms on real-world data of moderate complexity using an open source ecosystem and MapReduce and R environments. Students explore the practical aspects of this subject using the AWS platform.
Choice of CSE2BVX, or CSE2CVX, or CSE2DVX
This subject covers several industry recognised certifications from the Linux Professional Institute. It teaches both the LPI Linux Essentials entry level certification and more advanced LPIC-1 Exam 101. It validates your technical abilities in installing and configuring a computer running Linux and in using the command line. You are encouraged to subsequently pursue the LPIC-1 Exam 102 to enable you to gain the full LPIC-1: System Administrator certification.
This subject covers the industry recognised certification: Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician (CCENT) from Cisco. It addresses a wide spectrum of fundamental technical concepts covering networking, LAN switching, routing, infrastructure services and infrastructure maintenance.

Bachelor of Applied Cloud Technology
The industry project enables students to experience real-life involvement in the planning and development of a medium-sized project relevant to their degree that addresses a real-life or community problem. The project utilises a teamwork approach to problem-solving in cloud technology. Students integrate previously learned skills and knowledge relating to technical, social and ethical issues. The subject covers project management, team organisation and communication, project estimation and planning, risk management, documentation and reporting and milestone presentation. Students continue with this project in Industry Project Cloud 3B.
The industry project enables students to experience real-life involvement in the planning and development of a medium-sized project relevant to their degree that address a real-life or community problem. The project utilises a teamwork approach to problem-solving in cloud technology. Students integrate previously learned skills and knowledge relating to technical, social and ethical issues. The subject covers project management, team organisation and communication, system testing, configuration management, technical documentation and reporting, project documentation and reporting and milestone presentation. The subject culminates in a technical report and presentation to client representatives. This subject addresses La Trobe’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Essential. This is the second half of the Industry Project subject (CSE3CAX).
In this subject students undertake a comprehensive study of workplace practices related to the ICT industry and reflect heavily on their personal views and approaches to individual and team responsibilities. Students develop professional skills related to ethical and moral decision-making and evaluate the social implications of their work and the broader global context. The subject is very interactive with guided discussions and debates. Specifically related to the La Trobe Global Citizenship Essential, the students embark on a series of learning activities and assessed tasks to broaden their understanding of different cultures and sensitivities relevant to engaging in the ICT sector. Students demonstrate and reflect on their skills in team leadership, intercultural communication, active listening and communication, conflict management and meeting behaviour.
This subject covers the various cloud services for compute, storage, networking, security, identity and access management. When designing a cloud-based system the key concepts such as high availability, reliability, cost optimisation, scalability and performance efficiency are also emphasised. This subject is designed to prepare students for undertaking a vendor certification.
This subject prepares the student to be able to create automatable and repeatable deployments of networks and systems on the cloud platform. Key concepts such as cloud metrics, provisioning systems, data integrity and data security are also emphasised. This subject is designed to prepare students for undertaking a vendor certification.
This subject covers the implementation of Big Data services on cloud. Key aspects include designing and maintaining Big Data and leveraging tools to automate data analysis using open source frameworks. This subject is designed to prepare students for undertaking a vendor certification.
Third-year elective in Cloud Technology, Information Technology or Computer Science
This subject focuses on the design and deployment of a private cloud solution using an open source cloud platform. Key concepts such as the building blocks of a private cloud, deployment of a private cloud and architecting of a private cloud are covered.

You can complete your degree in three years with the flexibility online learning gives you. Studying 30 hours per week on average should see you successfully complete your qualification within this timeframe. Each year’s assessments must be completed and marked within each 12-month time limit. You can complete your studies after years 1, 2 or 3 with a La Trobe qualification.

Those of you who have studied at tertiary level elsewhere, or who have relevant studies or work experience*, may be eligible for advanced standing (credit) towards your online La Trobe University qualification. Each college has specific policies in respect to the number and type of subjects and work experience it is willing to accept for advanced standing (credit) purposes.
We will inform you of the process for advanced standing at enrolment. However, if at some later point you believe you are eligible for advanced standing, please advise your Student Experience Team as soon as possible. It is preferable that you have advanced standing approved for a subject prior to starting it. Advanced standing must be approved before going through census for that subject.
