This subject covers the implementation of Big Data services on cloud. Key aspects include designing and maintaining Big Data and leveraging tools to automate data analysis using open source frameworks. This subject is designed to prepare students for undertaking a vendor certification.

Quantitative analysis plays an important role in business analytics and knowledge engineering, thus it is very useful to develop computing skills for data regression and classification. This subject covers some fundamentals of computational intelligence techniques, including fuzzy inference systems, neural networks and hybrid neuro-fuzzy systems. The subject is designed with a focus on solving time-series forecasting problems using fuzzy inference systems, where fuzzy inference mechanisms and fuzzy rule extraction from numerical data are addressed. Some advanced learning techniques for training neural networks will also be highlighted. In labs and assignments students will work with business datasets for time-series prediction using a fuzzy system, which helps to consolidate the knowledge taught in the lectures and gain a hands-on experience on computational intelligence applications in business.

This subject provides the concepts of cybersecurity. It covers a broad range of cybersecurity related topics such as infrastructure security, network edge security, identity and access management, firewalls and load balancers, risk management and operational and organisational security. It is also designed with a focus to protect computing infrastructure from cybersecurity threats and attacks.

In this subject, students will learn about Internet of Things and the technologies surrounding it. They will also learn about smart objects and their usage in designing IoT-based solutions for smart homes. The course also covers real-world applications of IoT which include smart cities and industrial systems.

This subject begins with an overview of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) architecture and security attacks on system services, and a discussion of different existing security mechanisms. The main focus includes cryptography, system security, network and web security. The students learn: (1) cryptographic algorithms and protocols, underlying network security applications including single-key and public-key encryption methods, hash functions, digital signatures and key exchange; (2) intrusion detection systems and firewalls that can be used to protect a computer system from security threats, such as intruders, viruses, and worms; (3) the use of cryptographic algorithms and security protocols for providing network and internet security in terms of user authentication/identification, IP security and web security.

This subject prepares the student to be able to create automatable and repeatable deployments of networks and systems on the cloud platform. Key concepts such as cloud metrics, provisioning systems, data integrity and data security are also emphasised. This subject is designed to prepare students for undertaking a vendor certification.

This subject covers the fundamentals of wireless transmission. Students will study various physical layer issues and impairments, and challenges in wireless communication compared with wired communication. In-depth analysis will be carried out on CSMA/CA standards; WEP and dynamic WEP standards and the processes involved for maintaining privacy and confidentiality in wireless networks. A brief introduction will be given to Bluetooth and WiMAX technologies.

Prerequisites

For admission to any of our online courses, one of the following is required.

  • If you have completed Year 12 in the past 2 years, you will need a 50+ ATAR score with a Units 3 & 4 study score of at least 25 in English, or
  • An equivalent academic level achievement, or
  • At least two years of work experience, after leaving school

All students are required to undergo the online Pre-enrolment Assessment and achieve a pass mark of 60%.

Advanced standing

Those of you who have studied at tertiary level elsewhere, or who have relevant studies or work experience*, may be eligible for advanced standing (credit) towards your online La Trobe University qualification. Each college has specific policies in respect to the number and type of subjects and work experience it is willing to accept for advanced standing (credit) purposes.

We will inform you of the process for advanced standing at enrolment. However, if at some later point you believe you are eligible for advanced standing, please advise your Student Experience Team as soon as possible. It is preferable that you have advanced standing approved for a subject prior to starting it. Advanced standing must be approved before going through census for that subject.

Equipment required

To get the most out of this exciting online experience, we recommend you equip yourself with the right tools for the job before you commence your studies.

All study resources (content and assessments) will be provided as part of the course. You will need to supply the following:

Students studying IT subjects will require the additional items:

  • 64bit CPU capable of virtualisation (VT-x/AMD-v) with at least 4 cores (either an Intel core i5/i7 or an AMD FX-61XX or AMD FX-81XX)
  • Minimum 150GB free storage (internal or external). Cloud storage is encouraged for backups but shouldn’t be included in minimum.
